I may be a doctor but....

This is day two of house plant drama..not looking good.

...I can't save everything. You know I love to garden and am really good at keeping those plants going, get good produce, etc, etc, however, houseplants are a whole new world to me. Luckily for me my BFF is a landscape architech in Chi-town ( very very talented girl who has done some amazing work and even worked on some famous basketball players house...) so I frequently call her when I'm having house drama with my plants. So I called her up the other day to tell her about my two lil' low-light plants that I purchased at Walmart for $3 ( b/c my history with houseplants has taught me to not spend too much) that had suddenly gone limp. Now don't get me wrong, in the 3 months of these plants existence in my little home, this has happened before but this time it was different. Even though parts of the plant were limp, the leaves on those parts were still as perky as could be..which lead me to believe something was wrong. I had just watered them the day before. So of course my BFF had the usual questions; when did you water last? did you move it? is it by a window? etc etc. So she thought maybe they were shocked b/c its now getting cold out and they are very close to the window..

That was all we could come up with...but again something was telling me there was more to this picture. I was missing something. So I started to think about what I did and when was the last time that I watered them. I remember that I had watered them with cold water from the fridge. There was a half bottle left that had been in the fridge forever so i used some of it to water my plants. I called her back again ( thank God she is the best friend anyone could ask for) and asked, could it be the cold water? She told me not likely...but said to put them in a warmer spot just in case.... So I went back to tracing my steps, and that water bottled I used was still on the counter... As soon as I saw the black squiggle on the cap it dawned on me....that was not water!

That was moonshine that my boyfriend has brought back from the south... Well, duh! No wonder why my plants were limp and hanging over the side of the vase...they were hungover! LOL. So I hooked those babies up to an I.V., a.k.a. the sink, and flushed the hell out of them b/c at this point we are talking life or death. Unfortunately they did not receive medical treatment soon enough because a 3 day hangover for a lil plant is NOT good. So my two beautiful plants are now one lil' stalk that is barely hanging on. He must of been the smart one who knew his limit...

Well, my BFF and I got a good laugh out it. She said she's given her plants lots of things before, but moonshine was not one of them.... :)  The verdict is still out whether the remaining lil' stalk with survive.  My fingers are crossed and hopefully my thumb is still a little green.....

The lonely survivor... so far he is still standing...fingers crossed

Why Blog?? Why not

Its funny to me how blogging has become such a trend. Its kind of like the old school way of writing in your journal but you just make it public to the world.. Of course you don't have to tell your deep dirty little secrets, you just share pictures or give advice or whatever little tidbits you'd like... So I thought I would give this a whirl.

So bare with me as this is all new to me and I promise my site will get better once I have more time to publish some stuff on here.

Its all in the title....

So you ask yourself how did I come up with "Hounds and Heels"...? Well, it is kind of a funny story. My boyfriend and I were going to have some "family" pictures of ourselves with our furry family. So our photographer Amy, who is not only my boss' wife but also a friend, asked me which of the furry friends were coming.. You see, I have two house dogs (Charlie and Stewart) while Andre has 7 walker/treeing hound mixes that are outdoors in a kennel, more like a doggie suite for hounds. So my boss and his wife were thinking that it would be a very cute/appropriate picture to have me standing in a formal gown with some heels on, holding on to seven dog leashes of some very nice, but a little crazy mannered hounds. Of course I'm picturing this in a red long elegant dress with some spike heals on..and then I see myself being drug across the muddy field as the hounds spot a bear and do what they do best... Needlesstosay, I got a good laugh out of it and maybe someday will let Amy come back and fulfill the thought, or at least part of it..So from that, came Hounds and Heels. Given that I grew up in the city, have moved to small town and met the man of my dreams who is a die hard bear hunter who's travelled the country with his dogs, and have my own furry children I thought the name was very appropriate. I hope to share with you some of my daily laughs as a veterinarian perhaps some advice with your furry friends or if your a houndsman/woman then we may share some stories..
